One bitcoin is divisible
Bitcoin uses a large unit called a bitcoin, written BTC, and a much smaller unit called a satoshi, often shortened to sat. One bitcoin equals 100,000,000 satoshis.
Divisibility means someone can receive, save or spend a small fraction of a bitcoin. Owning bitcoin does not require purchasing one whole BTC.
BTC and sats describe the same value
A wallet may display 0.001 BTC or 100,000 sats. Those labels describe the same amount using different units, just as dollars and cents can describe the same money at different scales.
Before sending, check both the number and the selected unit. Confusing BTC with sats can produce a dramatically different amount.
Price does not change divisibility
Bitcoin's market price can rise or fall, but the conversion between BTC and sats remains fixed by convention: 100 million sats per BTC.
A provider may impose its own minimum purchase or withdrawal amount. That is a service rule, not a rule requiring people to buy a whole bitcoin.
Practise reading amounts
Start with simple conversions: 0.01 BTC is 1,000,000 sats, 0.001 BTC is 100,000 sats and 0.00001 BTC is 1,000 sats.
Use a wallet's confirmation screen to verify the unit, amount, destination and fee before approving a transaction.
Visual recap
One bitcoin, many smaller units
BTC and sats are two ways of expressing bitcoin value.

100,000,000 sats
0.01 BTC
1,000,000 sats

Key takeaways
- One bitcoin equals 100 million satoshis.
- You can buy or receive a fraction of a bitcoin.
- BTC and sats can represent the same value at different scales.
- Always verify the selected unit before sending.
- Service minimums are not Bitcoin's divisibility limit.
