Hardware wallets

A hardware wallet is a dedicated device that protects private keys and signs Bitcoin transactions separately from a normal computer or phone.

Hardware wallets in simple terms

A separate device for protecting and using keys

A hardware wallet is a small computer designed primarily to create, store and use private keys.

It connects to a phone or computer so wallet software can prepare transactions. The hardware wallet then displays the transaction details and signs only after you approve them.

The goal is to keep the private keys separate from the general-purpose device where malware and malicious software are more likely to exist.

Important distinction

A hardware wallet protects keys, but it cannot protect you when you approve incorrect transaction details.

A hardware wallet can create wallet keys inside the device so they do not need to be generated on a normal computer.

Secure setup

Initialise the device yourself

A hardware wallet should generate a new wallet while it is in your possession. Never trust recovery words supplied by a seller or included in the packaging.

Buy from a trusted source

Purchase directly from the manufacturer or a clearly authorised seller. Avoid used or preconfigured devices.

Inspect the packaging

Check for unusual damage, signs of tampering or unexpected recovery information inside the package.

Install official software

Download the companion software from the manufacturer's official source rather than advertisements or third-party download sites.

Update device firmware

Use the official application to install current firmware before creating the wallet.

Generate a new wallet

The device should create a fresh wallet during setup. Never use recovery words supplied in the box.

Record the recovery phrase

Copy every word accurately and keep the backup offline in a private, durable location.

Set a device PIN

Choose a PIN that is difficult to guess and different from common phone, card or computer PINs.

Send a small test amount

Practise receiving, verifying and recovering with a small amount before relying on the setup for larger savings.

Stop immediately

Do not use a device that arrives with a seed phrase already created.

Someone else may already possess a copy and could later access the wallet.

Transaction verification

Trust the device screen, not the computer

A compromised computer could display one address while sending a different address to the signing device. The hardware wallet screen is where the final details must be checked.

Check the address on the device

When receiving bitcoin, confirm the address shown by the wallet software matches the address displayed on the hardware wallet.

Check the destination address

Before sending, review the full destination address on the device screen rather than trusting only the computer display.

Check the amount

Confirm the amount shown on the hardware wallet is the amount you intended to send.

Check the fee

Review the network fee so an unexpectedly high fee is not approved accidentally.

Pause when details differ

Do not approve a transaction when the device screen shows different information from the wallet application.

Never approve automatically

Read the address, amount and fee shown on the hardware wallet before confirming every transaction.

Device recovery

The device is replaceable

Bitcoin is not permanently tied to one physical hardware wallet. The recovery phrase can normally recreate the same wallet on a compatible replacement.

Obtain a compatible replacement

Use a trusted wallet or replacement signing device that supports the same recovery standard.

Choose the recovery option

Select restore or recover instead of creating a new wallet.

Enter the phrase securely

Prefer entering the recovery words directly on the hardware wallet rather than into a normal computer.

Restore any optional settings

Reapply passphrases, account types or other settings only when they were part of the original setup.

Confirm expected addresses

Check that the recovered wallet displays the same known receiving addresses or test balance.

The recovery backup matters more than the device

A lost or broken device can be replaced. A lost device combined with a lost recovery backup may result in permanent loss of access.

Compatible wallet software can use your own Bitcoin node rather than relying on a third-party server for balances, transaction history and broadcasting.

The hardware wallet protects the keys. Your node verifies the Bitcoin network. They perform separate but complementary roles.
